Cortina, the queen of the Dolomites
Cortina d’Ampezzo is one of the most famous mountain resorts in the world. Surrounded by a complex of iconic and stunning mountain peaks, it is a true paradise both for ski lovers—offering 140 kilometers of slopes that are part of the Dolomiti Superski circuit—and for those who prefer the mountains in summer. The hiking trails and climbing routes are truly spectacular. It is therefore an exceptional destination not only for sports enthusiasts but also for those who are enchanted by breathtaking landscapes. Numerous photography books, hiking guides, and television broadcasts—especially during ski championships—attest to its appeal.
All the surrounding peaks are legendary: Antelao, Sorapis, Croda da Lago, the Tofane, Cristallo… and the Tre Cime… particularly fascinating is the phenomenon known as enrosadira, when, at sunset, the rock changes color and the mountains are tinged with a deep pink hue, creating a surreal and magical effect. For any tourist, a hike in the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites is a must, where along trails and via ferratas, one can admire unspoiled nature.
But Cortina is also the perfect destination for lovers of the good life and luxury shopping, with its numerous elegant boutiques offering the best of top Italian and international fashion brands. There is no shortage of antique shops, local craft stores, art galleries, and jewelers. The cuisine—served in mountain lodges and many downtown restaurants—is a blend of Venetian and Tyrolean culinary traditions. The most famous dishes include canederli, a type of large bread dumpling, and casunziei, beetroot- or potato-filled ravioli topped with melted butter.
In short, an hour’s drive is a small price to pay for all that Cortina has to offer: it is truly an unmissable destination!
